LitRPG Cover Mistakes That Confuse Readers and Kill Sales

LitRPG is the fastest-growing fantasy sub-genre — and the most visually misunderstood. These cover mistakes are why your book isn't reaching its core audience.

# LitRPG Cover Mistakes That Confuse Readers and Kill Sales

LitRPG readers are among the most genre-specific in fiction. They know exactly what they're looking for, and they find it — or don't — in under two seconds. These are the cover mistakes that make your LitRPG book invisible to the readers who would love it.

Mistake 1: No Game-World Elements

The most common and most damaging LitRPG cover mistake. A cover with a fantasy protagonist, a fantasy environment, and no visible game-world elements (status screens, level indicators, UI elements) is a generic fantasy cover. LitRPG readers will not identify it as LitRPG, and it will not appear in LitRPG-specific browsing behaviour.

Mistake 2: Tiny or Illegible UI Elements

Adding a status screen that's too small to read at thumbnail size is almost as bad as having no status screen at all. LitRPG readers are browsing on mobile devices. If your game-world elements aren't visible and legible at 160 pixels wide, they're not doing their job.

Mistake 3: Generic Fantasy Armour

A protagonist in generic fantasy armour — plate mail, chainmail, fantasy robes — without any game-world design elements reads as epic fantasy, not LitRPG. The armour and equipment should look game-designed: visible stat bonuses, glowing enchantments, equipment that reads as crafted within a game system.

Mistake 4: Wrong Colour Palette

LitRPG has a specific colour palette: blues, purples, and gold. Covers that use warm, earthy palettes (browns, greens, reds) read as epic fantasy. Covers that use neon palettes read as cyberpunk. The LitRPG palette is distinctive and readers have been trained to associate it with the genre.

Mistake 5: Photographic Covers

Photographic covers are rare in LitRPG and tend to signal other genres. The genre's visual language is rooted in illustrated and digital art. A photographic cover, even with UI elements added in post-production, will underperform against illustrated alternatives.

My LitRPG book is performing well in fantasy but not in LitRPG searches. What's wrong with my cover?

Your cover is probably reading as generic fantasy. Add visible game-world elements — a status screen, level indicator, or UI aesthetic — and test the new cover against the original with LitRPG readers.
